Abstract

This study examined leadership styles and student government effectiveness among student leaders in private higher education institutions in the Philippines and India. Using a cross-sectional design, purposive sampling, and a structured survey, data from 200 student leaders were analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Multi-Group Analysis (MGA). Results showed that transactional leadership was the most prominent leadership style, while laissez-faire leadership was the least evident. The measurement model demonstrated strong internal consistency, with composite reliability values ranging from 0.923 to 0.980. Transactional leadership was the strongest predictor of student government effectiveness (β = 0.613, t = 7.979, p < .001), while transformational leadership also showed a significant positive relationship; laissez-faire leadership had a weaker and less significant association. No significant cross-country differences were observed, suggesting similar leadership–effectiveness patterns in the Philippines and India. The findings highlight the importance of effective leadership styles, particularly transactional leadership, in strengthening student government effectiveness in higher education.
